\u0130ngilizce dilbilgisinde ge\u00e7mi\u015f zaman\u0131n (Simple Past Tense) temelini olu\u015fturan “was” ve “were” yap\u0131lar\u0131, asl\u0131nda \u015fimdiki zamanda kulland\u0131\u011f\u0131m\u0131z “to be” (olmak) fiilinin ge\u00e7mi\u015fe uyarlanm\u0131\u015f halleridir. Yani “am” ve “is” yard\u0131mc\u0131 fiilleri ge\u00e7mi\u015f zamanda “was” halini al\u0131rken, “are” yard\u0131mc\u0131 fiili “were” \u015fekline d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015f\u00fcr. Bu yap\u0131lar, ge\u00e7mi\u015fte ger\u00e7ekle\u015fmi\u015f ve bitmi\u015f durumlar\u0131, konumlar\u0131 veya \u00f6zellikleri anlatmak i\u00e7in kullan\u0131l\u0131r. Bu iki kelime asl\u0131nda \u015fimdiki zamandaki “am\/is\/are” yard\u0131mc\u0131 fiillerinin ge\u00e7mi\u015fe d\u00f6n\u00fc\u015fm\u00fc\u015f halidir.
